As Jerald Jacobs states in his landmark handbook on certification and accreditation law, "a fundamental goal of virtually every individual professional or academic institution is to improve in areas of competence, quality and effectiveness. Credentialing facilitates this achievement of this goal."
1
In fields where practioners come from diverse specialties, where assuring standardization is difficult or thorny, and particularly when the area is relatively new, as is the case with Cardiac Computed Tomography, certification provides a mechanism for individuals to demonstrate having acquired training and/or experience in accordance with practice guidelines and of meeting an established standard of knowledge.
The Rationale for Certification
2
- Defines the critical knowledge needed to practice, based on a consensus of experts
- Facilitates curriculum development at training institutions
- Facilitates verification of training, particularly from one region to another
- Facilitates maintenance of professional standards of practice and institutional standards for training
- Enhanced credibility of a specialty
- Empowers physician-leaders to shape the field
- Certification in cardiology has been associated with:
- Decreased mortality or length of stay after acute MI (Norcini JJ et al, Med Educ 2002)
- Higher use of recommended therapies (ASA, beta blockers, etc) after acute MI (Chen J et al, J Gen Intern Med 2006)
- Certification in surgery has been associated with reduced mortality and morbidity after colon resection (Prystowski JB et al, Surgery 2002)
- Lack of certification has been associated with increased rates of disciplinary actions (California, Ohio, Oklahoma)
On behalf of the CBCCT Board, I invite you to participate in the examination and be part of the advance of our field toward increased competence, quality and effectiveness.
Sincerely,
Manuel D. Cerqueira, MD
President, CBCCT
